Eureka! It's California!

We have arrived in California via Hwy 101 in Oregon. We were treated to some beautiful scenery along the coastline, especially the rocky beaches. The state of Oregon has made the beaches very accessible so it is easy to stop and take a walk on the beach. We did this several times which resulted in our trip covering only about 150 miles each day.

On one of our visits to the beach we were rewarded with the antics of two or more whales who were swimming in fairly shallow water, just off shore. They seemed very playful and spent time rolling on their sides and swimming past one another. It was quite a sight to see.

The dunes in southern Oregon are also awesome and must be a great place to drive dune buggies as there were plenty of businesses advertizing the sport. Once we were in California we turned off on to a drive that took us through some beautiful Redwood trees. They are quite unbelieveable and the ones we saw are not even the biggest ones. We hope to see them tomorrow when we drive further south.

We're spending a couple of a nights in Eureka so that we can do laundry and catch up on emails, etc. The weather continues to be beautiful, once the morning fog has burned off.

Love and blessings to all.

The Oregon Coast

From Fort Lewis, Washington we drove west to the coast and eventually started south on Hwy 101, which will take us down the entire coastline of Oregon. Our first stop was just west of Astoria, where we cross the mighty Columbia River again. We stayed three days at Fort Stevens State Park, which is one of the nicest state parks that we've ever camped in. The sites are very roomy with full hookups and there are miles of bicycle trails. Besides the beach there is a small freshwater lake and a bunker to explore. The beach is so pretty. Greta loves to run free on the sand but thinks the saltwater tastes funny.

On Sunday after church we went to the City Market which offered a great variety of unusual vegetables as well as the work of local artisans. And we purchased our customary bag of kettle corn as well as fresh corn on the cob and large green peppers. The weather was perfect and the market was very busy.

Today we drove south to Cape Lookout State Park which is also a very nice facility but not as nice as Fort Stevens. We have decided to only stay one night so we cancelled the rest of our reservation so that we can move on down the coast and still have time to visit the Redwood trees in California and arrive in Reno on time. We have found that driving down the coast of Oregon is a slow but very interesting process, especially with the frequent stops to view the scenery.
